Maize was the main agricultural product, and was most commonly formed into tortillas. Beans sometimes were served with maize tortillas. Irrigation agriculture was preformed on the chinampas. They were highly productive land plots.
Animals also provided a source of food. Animals such as deer, rabbits, boars, armadillos, fish, turtles, salamanders, mollusks, ducks, geese, cranes, and pigeons were eaten. Water animals were caught from lakes and streams using nets and spears. Bow and arrow were used to hunt large land animals. Turkeys were used for meat and eggs. Dogs, who were used for companionship were also sometimes used for meat purposes.
